Project of the Week
Handmade Paper Container

- Select a plastic bowl to use as your mold.
- Tear the paper to be used into strips about 1/2 – 1” wide and about 4 – 6” long.
- Use a liquid brand of starch. Faultless works well. Make sure that it is a liquid starch that works well for crafts. Not all brands will do the job.
- Pour liquid starch into a container. (An aluminum one works well)
- Place one strip into the starch coating it completely.
- Place the starch-coated strip between two fingers and remove the excess starch. Use your fingers as a “squeegee.”
- Place the strip on the inside of the bowl starting with the sides first. Overlap the strip over the edge of the bowl and press into place.
- MAKE SURE YOU DO THE SIDES FIRST AS THE STARCH WILL DRIP INTO THE BOTTOM OF THE BOWL AND SIT.
- As you add a new strip make sure that it overlaps or touches the previous strip that you have applied.
- After you have gone around the entire side of the bowl once, you will then apply your strips to the bottom of the bowl.
- As you work, use paper towel to constantly soak up the excess starch that drips into the bottom of the bowl.
- Cover the bowl completely two to three times
- When you are satisfied with your application, set your bowl in a warm place to dry. Usually your project will be dry in 24 hours. Depending on how much starch settled into the bottom, it might take longer.
- Remove your project from the mold. If needed you can take a knife or letter opener to help pry off your container.
- When bowl is completely dry you can add embellishments such as ribbon, flowers, beads or feathers.
ALTERNATIVE:
Put starch into a spray bottle and completely saturate each piece of handmade paper instead of dipping it in starch. The pieces must be completely soaked with this method and more pressure must be applied when attaching it to the inside of bowl. You may also get a “smoother” feel and appearance to the outside of container when it comes out of the mold/bowl.
